Study room
A study room is the shared space in a residence meant for quiet study outside the bedroom, with desks and its own opening hours, which are sometimes extended at exam time. When demand outstrips the seats, it moves to booking by time slot.

How it is organised
In a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) the study room is part of everyday life in the house: some people study better surrounded by others studying, and some share a room and have nowhere else quiet. In student residences and PBSA there are also small rooms for group work or video calls. The rules of use usually cover three things:
- Opening hours. Which time slots it is open, whether that changes at exam time and, if it opens at night, who locks up.
- Silence. Whether it follows the residence's quiet hours or stricter ones, and what happens with phone calls.
- Desks. Whether you can save a seat with your notes and for how long, and whether there are bookable desks and free ones.
When the room fills up, the sheet on the door stops working and booking by time slot takes over, with a capacity and a limit per person, like any common-room booking. Group rooms are usually the first to need it, because they are taken in blocks of hours. And booking is not enough: a booked seat nobody uses is lost just as if it were taken, so it is worth deciding in advance what happens to people who do not turn up. - Common-room bookingCommon-room booking is the system residents use to reserve a study room, the laundry, the gym or a court in time slots. It sets the opening hours, the capacity, how far ahead a slot can be booked and how many times a week, so the space is shared without arguments.
- Quiet hoursQuiet hours are the period, almost always at night, during which a residence's rules ask people not to make noise in rooms, corridors and common areas so others can sleep and study. Each hall of residence or student residence sets them in its own rules, and they are sometimes extended at exam time.
