Waiting list
A waiting list is the ordered list of people who applied for a place in a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) or a residence and did not get one because it is full. When a place frees up, it goes to the next person under the residence's criteria.

How it is ordered
What decides the order is not the list but the criteria that produce it. In colegios mayores, Decree 2780/1973 gives priority in student access to the strongest academic performance and, where that is equal, to the lowest financial means (art. 20.1); in the annual selection, to those who were resident or affiliated the previous year, also weighing their conduct in the college (art. 21.2). In the colegios mayores and residences a university founds itself, access follows public, objective and transparent procedures, known in advance (University Student Statute, art. 66.3). A private residence sets its own criteria.
The list mostly moves at two points: when the place reservation deadline for admitted students expires, and when someone withdraws once the year has started. What makes it useful is having, in each row, how to reach the person, what they applied for and when they were offered the place.
Worth knowing
What people take for granted: that whoever is on the list is still waiting. Months pass between the application and the vacancy, and by then some have found something else. Offering the place with a short deadline to reply, and moving to the next person if there is no answer, stops a room standing empty for weeks. How each enquiry about a place reaches the residence is covered in admissions.

- Place reservationA place reservation is the step by which someone admitted to a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) or a residence confirms they will take up their place the following year, often by signing the terms and paying an advance. Until then, the place can go to someone else.
- AdmissionsAdmissions is the process by which a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) or a residence decides who gets a place for a year: call for applications, application, selection under its criteria and notice of the result. In a colegio mayor, the entry rules must be in its house rules.
