Student accommodation
Admissions
Admissions is the process by which a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) or a residence decides who gets a place for a year: call for applications, application, selection under its criteria and notice of the result. In a colegio mayor, the entry rules must be in its house rules.

What the process looks like
Decree 2780/1973, which still regulates colegios mayores, gives the outline: each college's house rules set out its entry rules (art. 5.b), the director decides or proposes admission under those rules (art. 11.b) and whoever chooses a college adheres to its rules and commits to college life (art. 18.3). The 1973 text provides for opening all places every June and selecting before August (art. 21), and the LOSU leaves the running of colegios mayores to each university's Statutes (seventh additional provision): it is worth reading both. Who sets the criteria, by type of residence:
| Residence | Who sets the criteria | What the rules require |
|---|---|---|
| Colegio mayor | Its house rules, within the university's Statutes | Entry rules in the house rules (Decree 2780/1973, art. 5.b) |
| University-founded residence | The university | A public, objective and transparent procedure, known in advance (RD 1791/2010, art. 66.3) |
| Private residence | The owner | No sector rule sets the procedure; the GDPR does apply to applicants' data |
Worth knowing
What people take for granted: that admissions starts with the application. It starts earlier, with the first question from someone looking for a place; if that question goes unanswered, the application may never arrive. How Bedel handles it is in admissions, and what comes after the yes, in place reservation.

The LOSU defines it as a university institution that only non-profit entities may run or promote.
- Place reservationA place reservation is the step by which someone admitted to a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) or a residence confirms they will take up their place the following year, often by signing the terms and paying an advance. Until then, the place can go to someone else.
