Laundry
A residence laundry is the room with washing machines and dryers that residents use, self-service or staffed, or the service that washes the building's bed linen and towels. It is one of the common areas with the most friction, because there are few machines for many people at the same times.

Two things with the same name
In a residence, "laundry" can mean the in-house service that washes sheets, towels and table linen, with its own staff or contracted out, or the self-service room where each resident washes their own clothes. The first is a logistics matter (how much bed linen goes in and out, and how often). The second is a matter of living together: machines taken up by washing that finished hours ago, dryers that do not dry, slots hogged on Sunday afternoons.
The usual fixes are three: times by floor, a cap on uses per person per week, or booking by slot. The third is the one that leaves a record of who had the machine, and it works just like booking common spaces; in Bedel, see space booking. A broken machine is a maintenance ticket like any other, although often nobody reports it because everyone assumes someone else already has.
Worth knowing
What people take for granted: that more machines end the problem. They end the wait, not the abandoned washing. A written, known rule on how long a load can sit in the machine before someone else takes it out heads off more arguments than a new washing machine.

- Common-room bookingCommon-room booking is the system residents use to reserve a study room, the laundry, the gym or a court in time slots. It sets the opening hours, the capacity, how far ahead a slot can be booked and how many times a week, so the space is shared without arguments.
- Room cleaningRoom cleaning is the service in which residence staff clean each room at a set frequency, from daily to weekly depending on the residence. It covers the bathroom, floors and bins and sometimes changing the bed linen, and it is organised by floor and by shift.
