Director of a colegio mayor
The director of a colegio mayor (a Spanish hall of residence with a formative programme) is the rector's delegated authority in the college and answers for how it runs (Decree 2780/1973, art. 9). The rector appoints them, and their duties include admitting and disciplining residents.

Appointment and duties
The decree sets out the appointment: the rector makes it on the proposal, where relevant, of the entity that promotes the college, and the rector orders their removal in agreement with that entity (art. 10). The 1973 text requires at least a licenciado degree or a qualification of equal rank (art. 10.2). For the colegios and residences a university founds itself, the University Student Statute leaves the appointment of management teams to each university's Statutes, with residents taking part (art. 66.5). Their duties, under art. 11:
- Representing the college and making sure it meets its aims.
- Deciding or proposing, under the house rules, the admission, sanctions and expulsion of residents.
- Convening and chairing the Advisory Council, the Management Committee and the Consejo Colegial.
- Accounting for the college: budgets, an annual report to the rector's office and oversight of administration.
Worth knowing
The sign on the door does not make the director. Whoever runs a building called "Colegio Mayor" that is neither recognised by ministerial order nor integrated in or affiliated to a university is running a residence, and the decree does not reach them. The difference is explained in the guide to colegio mayor or residence, and the figure, in colegio mayor.
