Coexistence (app and API)
Coexistence is Meta's option for connecting a number already used on the WhatsApp Business app to the Cloud API without changing it: software handles the volume while one-to-one messages are still written from the app, with chats mirrored on both sides. It is only enabled through a Solution Partner or a Tech Provider.

What stays and what does not
Onboarding is done with Embedded Signup: the business chooses to connect its app account, confirms with a code and decides whether to share its chat history. It needs version 2.24.17 or later of the app, and Meta has supported it for numbers in the European Union since 23 October 2025. From then on, what is written in the app neither opens nor extends the 24-hour window and Meta does not charge for it; what goes out through the Cloud API follows its own rules. What changes in the app:
- One-to-one chats stay in the app and are mirrored in the software. Contacts and the last six months of messages can be synchronised, only once and within 24 hours of onboarding.
- Broadcast lists are disabled (existing ones become read-only) and group chats are not synchronised.
- Disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location are switched off in one-to-one chats.
- The number gets a fixed throughput of 20 messages per second, linked devices are unlinked when connecting and, if the primary phone goes unused for about 14 days, the connection to the provider is cut.
Worth knowing
What people take for granted: that any tool can offer it. Meta requires whoever enables it to be a Solution Partner or a Tech Provider. For a residence whose reception has always used the same number, it is the way to keep it, and the conditions above are worth reviewing first. Compared with staying on the app alone: WhatsApp Business or the API.
