On-call duty
On-call duty is the period when a member of staff, not necessarily in the building, must be able to deal with anything urgent: answer the phone, make a decision or come in. In a student residence it usually rotates between management, maintenance or tutors, especially at night and at weekends.

On site or on call
There are two kinds. On site, the person is in the building even if they have nothing assigned: that is the usual pattern for a 24-hour reception. On call, they are away with their phone and commit to answering within a set time and coming in if needed: that is what many residences do with maintenance or management at night. The difference is not about comfort. Directive 2003/88/EC knows only two states, working time or rest period (Article 2), and which one on-call time falls into is not decided by what the rota calls it: it is worth having the collective agreement or the contract say so before the question comes up.
On-call duty only works if whoever writes at two in the morning reaches the person on call that night, not the usual number. That needs an up-to-date rota, a rule for what triggers it and another for what happens if nobody answers: the escalation matrix. The step from the assistant to the person is covered in handoff to a human.
Worth knowing
What people take for granted: that whoever is on call finds out. If the alert goes to a group or to a phone that is not theirs that night, the duty exists on the rota and not in practice. And on-call duty that rings for everything ends with the phone on silent.

- Handoff to a humanA handoff to a human is passing a conversation from the AI assistant to a member of staff, because the person asks for it or because the matter needs a decision. Done well, it reaches a specific phone with the context and, if nobody answers, moves up to the person in charge.
- Night shiftThe night shift is the stretch of time when a residence is covered by fewer people, usually from ten at night until the next morning. In a student residence it covers the door, emergencies and whatever cannot wait, and in Spain work in that period has its own rules under the Workers' Statute.
- Escalation matrixAn escalation matrix is the table that says, for each type of report and each level of urgency, who gets it first, how long they have to pick it up and who it goes up to if they do not. It turns "let someone know" into a rule that holds the same at ten in the morning as at three at night.
